Bed Bug Treatment: What to Do Before the Exterminator Arrives

Published 2026-08-13 · Statewide Pest Service

Bed bugs are the pest people are most embarrassed about — and the one where DIY does the most damage. Bug bombs and store sprays scatter bed bugs into adjacent rooms and apartments. A professional bed bug treatment works the first time if the home is prepped properly. Here's the checklist we send every customer.

Before we arrive

  • Wash all bedding, curtains and clothing from affected rooms on hot; dry on high for 30+ minutes. Bag clean items.
  • Remove clutter under beds and in closets (this is where bugs hide).
  • Pull furniture 12 inches from walls if you're able.
  • Empty nightstands and dressers into bags.
  • Don't move items to other rooms — that spreads the infestation.
  • Vacuum mattress seams, box springs and baseboards; seal and discard the bag outside.

What treatment involves

We inspect to map the infestation, then use a combination of heat, targeted residual products and mattress encasements. You'll be out of the home for a few hours. A follow-up visit two weeks later catches anything that hatched after treatment.

After treatment

  • Keep encasements on for a full year.
  • Leave residual product undisturbed — don't mop baseboards for two weeks.
  • Use interceptor cups under bed legs to monitor.

Renters and landlords

Indiana landlords are generally responsible for pest control in rentals unless the lease says otherwise. We provide discreet, unmarked service for apartments and documentation for property managers.
